Apple announces that Leopard will be delayed

Say it isn’t so! Last week, Apple made it official. They will not be able to roll out the latest version of the operating system until October pushing their possible Spring 07 release date WAY back. Here’s a quick snippet from the Unofficial Apple Weblog.

Apple has just issued a press release statement announcing that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard has been delayed until October. The reason? iPhone: “we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned.” However, Apple will still be displaying a “feature complete” version of Leopard at June’s WWDC event, and will be giving beta versions for developers to take home and help put the finishing touches on.

So what do we think? While we would enjoy having a new release of the operating soon, it really doesn’t bother us that much. Apple has a lot on their plate right now and we’re sure it takes time to get all this technology stuff correct. We didn’t even blame Microsoft for their Vista delay, you have to get your product correct the first time. Sure people may start drawing comparisons with Apple and Microsoft given that Microsoft pushed Vista back over and over. And of late, Apple has had problems actually getting product to market when they say, remember the original Apple TV release date? We would rather Apple would just keep their mouths shut until they have product in box ready ship. We like surprises more than we do disappointment.

Besides, Tiger is still a better operating system than any version of Windows in our minds and we haven’t seen enough of Leopard to see a real need to upgrade. Maybe at WWDC we’ll learn more and get excited, but for now we are just digging exploring Quicksilver, Textmate, iGTD, iShowU and all the other wonderful Mac only software that us more productive in life and work. Speaking of productivity, be on the look out for a new series we are going to begin soon. We won’t spoil it here, but we think our Mac readers will enjoy the series and our Windows readers might learn a thing or two about why we feel the way we do about our Macs.
