Google Desktop now available for Mac

Google released the beta of their Google Desktop for Mac today. So why would you want to install Google Desktop when OS X already includes Spotlight for searching? So you can experiment with all of those wonderful Google search tips we showed you in a previous article, of course. Now you can view the results within the Google Desktop application without nary a browser.

Imagine using our search tips and being able to view the weather, show times and perform quick conversions right on your desktop. Another feature that this search tool has that Spotlight does not is Gmail search. If you use Gmail, you can now search through your messages for specific content. Very useful.

This tool also includes something Google calls File Versioning. Here’s what the Google site says about this feature.

Google Desktop creates cached copies (snapshots) of your files and other items each time you view them, and stores these copies on your Mac’s hard drive. As a result, you can often use Desktop to find previous versions of your files or ones you’ve accidentally deleted.

Sounds like an extremely useful feature and one that should tide we Mac users over until Leopard is released and we have access to Time Machine.

Download Google Desktop for Mac.

Windows users can also download Google Desktop. Before we made the entire switch to Macs, we used this application quite regularly.
