Google LayOut

As readers know, SketchUp is a popular piece of software here at GUOM. The free version is perfect for beginning 3D model creators and the Professional version is the perfect compliment to any Architect, Engineer or Graphic Designer. I use the Pro version regularly and one of the features included is the addition of Google LayOut. LayOut allows the user to present their model on printed sheets of paper with various views and embellishments. A while back, and inspired by an article in Make: magazine, I created a 3D replica of a model that was described in the 1913 book, The Boy Mechanic. I later gave this assignment to my Engineering students in my Geometric Modeling and Visualization class. You can find more information about this model and the assignment I give to my Engineering Students on my faculty page located at:

I hadn’t used LayOut for any projects previously and decided to give it a try. Below are images of the pages I created to share my model in print form. Click on the image for larger views from my Flickr pool and to see other images of the workbench.

After reviewing a few of the online training videos I found it very easy to create detailed views of my model and LayOut included many tools that allow for some very sophisticated “layouts.”
