Quicktime Editing ImageHere’s the first in our new GUOM Quick Tip series that we hope to post from time to time in the midst of all of our other content. Today we take a quick look at simple video editing with Quicktime Pro. You’ve probably heard this before if you use Quicktime, but Quicktime Pro is the best $29 you are going to spend if you regularly edit video on a Mac or Windows machine. It is a GUOM recommended buy. So to get you started quickly with video editing, try these quick keystrokes to quickly remove or trim to a section of video from a video file.

1. Open a video file to edit.

2. Press space to begin playing the video.

3. When you locate a portion of the video that is the beginning of the section you wish to edit, press space again to stop playback.

4. Use ← and → to move frame by frame through the video and select the frame at the beginning of the section of video to edit.

5. Press i to mark the in point. This sets a marker at the beginning of the section to edit.

6. Press space again to begin playing the video from the in point.

7. Once you are near the end of the section you wish to edit, press space again to stop playback.

8. Use ← and → to move frame–by–frame and select the frame at the end of the section of video to edit.

9. Press o to mark the out point. This sets a marker at the end of the section to edit. The complete section of video to be edited is now selected.

10. Press del to remove the section. Alternately you could use the Edit pull-down menu and select Trim to Selection to remove all but the selected portion of the video.

11. Save or export the video.

That’s it. You now have the tools you need to quickly perform basic video editing using Quicktime Pro.
