LEGO Celebrates 50th Anniversary at 1:58pm (Denmark Time) Today!
As you know, we are HUGE fans of LEGO. We have enough LEGO bricks in our home to probably build another home. So we are very happy to announce that LEGO is celebrating their 50th Anniversary during the month of January. More specifically at 1:58pm Denmark Time today (28 January). We’ve been meaning to blog about this for sometime to prepare our readers and quite frankly it’s slipped past our radar. Have no fear faithful reader, here’s the info you need to celebrate and not a moment too soon.
Here’s what LEGO has to say about their 50th Anniversary.
The 50th birthday of the LEGO brick is in January 2008 and there is plenty to celebrate. Children all over the world have played with LEGO bricks for the past 50 years, and LEGO is still right at the top of many wish lists – just as it always has been. Industry and trade associations also recognize the LEGO success. Just before the turn of the millennium the LEGO brick was voted “Toy of the Century”, one of the highest awards in the toy industry, by both Fortune Magazine in the US and the British Association of Toy Retailers.
You can read more about LEGO history on the LEGO.com Parents site. LEGO celebrated this event by releasing an updated reissue of an early set, the Town Plan. Here’s what LEGO Shop at Home has to say about this set:
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the modern LEGO brick with this special-edition update of the classic Town Plan set! Completely redesigned with the best of modern bricks, details and design, the all-new Town Plan features a 1950s-style gas station with pumps, carwash and garage, a town hall with a newly-married couple, a movie theater with ticket booth, seats and posters, 2 automobiles, 8 minifigures, rare LEGO colors and elements, and more.
You can purchase this set from LEGO Shop at Home or through the GUOM Amazon Store.
As you work through your day, take a moment to remember those fond LEGO memories of your childhood or as an AFOL. That moment is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. In recognition you should probably break out a set and just see where your mind takes you. Perhaps you should consider creating a happy 50th vignette. If you do, let us know about it and we’ll post here at GUOM.
Oh…and it seems we aren’t the only fans LEGO. It’s a well documented fact that the folks at Google are also fond of the brick and the banner they are displaying at the top of their search page today is a good indicator.

Thanks to JR for pointing this one out to us. JR also recommends everyone read the Time article on this event.
{Update: 2008-01-31 08:20:11} Browsing the tubes this morning led me to this video that commemorates LEGO’s 50th.
One last site you should review today is Jake McKee’s Community Guy blog where he describes his history with LEGO. A great blog post and a very interesting story. Leg godt (or play well).
