Lifehacker provides info on how to master your digital media with VLC
Some blog posts are interesting, some are helpful, others are just downright life changing. Lifehacker’s recent post entitled How to Master Your Digital Media with VLC is somewhere between the second and last item. In a nutshell, Lifehacker Senior Editor Adam Pash shares 4 interesting uses of VLC for tasks other than simply playing media files. Not familiar with VLC? It’s basically a cross-platform media player like iTunes or Microsoft Media Player, only with a lot more muscle. This software will play virtually ANY video file format. Get your copy and read more here. Adam provides information on how to:
1. Rip Any DVD - as the title implies, take a protected DVD and convert into a digital file that you can play on your computer without inserting the DVD. Of course in doing this, you break about 5000 international laws, but as every Fair Use fanatic knows, as long as you aren’t harming the work, you’re pretty safe. I subscribe to the, I bought it, it’s mine rule. And one last word of warning, DO NOT borrow other folks DVDs and rip them. Keep it legit and only rip copies you own. Why would you want to rip a DVD anyway? Let’s move to number 2. Shall we?
2. Convert any video for your iPod or iPhone - I bought a DVD and now studios want me to purchase another copy to watch on the go. Me thinks not!
3. Stream media to other computers - that’s right, once you have an electronic copy of the DVD content, you can now stream it to other computers in your home or office. Setup up a media server to store all of this content and then stream it to another computer, XBox, PS3 attached to your television. Kind of an in home video on demand system.
4. Play ripped DVDs - sounds obvious, but once you have the digital version of your movie you can also use VLC to play your files and if you follow some of the other tips in the article you can find out how to rip the DVDs complete with menus!
