Portable Atari 2600 Advanced DS

So you’ve got some of those old Atari 2600 cartridges hanging around in a dark closet somewhere and that soldering iron hasn’t been fired up in years. Benjamin Heckendorn has just the project for you. Build your own handheld Atari 2600. We call it the Portable Atari 2600 Advanced DS. Ben provides plenty of images of his creation and you can even download his technical drawings in Adobe Illustrator format.

Who needs cutting edge graphics and gameplay when nothing can beat the blocky nostalgia of Pitfall and Basketball with a single button joystick. Our favorite design feature is the use of the cartridge as a sunshade for outdoor play. We’ve come a long way with portable gaming technology. This is a do it yourself project. Ben won’t sell you his and while several folks have asked Ben for a kit, it doesn’t appear as if one is going to be available anytime soon. If you’re not sure how to get started creating your own video game console, Ben also has a book available to get you started. You can find the link below.
