YouTube destined for iPhone and AppleTV

Apple announced today that folks buying the new iPhone on June 29th will be able to watch YouTube videos out of the box. So along with phone, music and the web, users will be able to bump into poles and cars while watching their favorite short YouTube video clips. What’s interesting is that the video is going to be encoded in H.264 rather than the standard Flash video format currently being used. This excites us as the quality of the video previously is what we would call, “shoddy.” H.264 should bring to us much improved video quality with greater detail. Perfect for those GUOM Quick Tip Videocasts we enjoy creating.

Apple also had this to say about YouTube video for the AppleTV.

Apple TV customers, meanwhile, can begin enjoying that content today after installing the free software update directly from Apple TV. [Jun 20, 2007]

We can’t wait to get home and perform our update. The combination of YouTube and AppleTV is just perfect when you want to kill a couple of hours. If you are not familiar with AppleTV, be sure to check out our full review.
